North West boosts enterprise development and economies in VTSD

VTSD Retail Warehouse beneficiaries pleased with profits

The beneficiaries of VTSD Retail Warehouse who are mostly tuck-shops, hair salons and butchery owners in the JB Marks Local Municipality, have glorified this great initiative by North West Provincial Government which is now boosting enterprise development and economies in the VTSD (Villages, Townships and Small Dorpies) areas.

VTSD Retail Warehouse which is implemented by North West Development Corporation - NWDC, was launched by North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo last year. It was established to empower previously disadvantaged local tuck shop owners with competitive bulk buying prices, enable them to highly compete with foreign national stores and provide financial boost by growing their profit.

A tuck-shop owner in Ikageng Twonship in Potchefstroom, Boikanyo Mokiti (48) said he now possess the buying power as he buy directly from the manufacturers, saving on transport and delivery costs and he is also providing good quality items to the local community.

“This is a life changing initiative to all tuckshop owners. Government knew our concerns and they resolved them by introducing this VTSD Retail Warehouse. We buy in bulk and we are making profit. We now even have ambitions of growing our businesses because we are not spending a lot on travelling and delivering costs” said Mokoiti.

The initiative is also aimed at supporting the National Development Plan by developing enterprise economy of the province’s VTSD areas to deal with the triple challenges of poverty, inequality and unemployment in the province.

Some of the clients of the VTSD Retail Warehouse were trained on areas such as merchandising, customer care, financial management, supply chain processes and marketing among others.

Nkosinathi Maila, one of the beneficiaries in Ventersdorp who owns a tuckshop, is more thankful to the training. “The training which entailed Wholesale Distribution and the Point of Sale training is more valuable to me as it makes me to maximize profits after buying from the VTSD Retail Warehouse. I’m really grateful” said Maila.

The provincial government will be rolling-out VTSD Hyper Warehouse project to other identified townships in the province, the beneficiaries of which will also participate in a training and skills development programme. Moreover, mentoring and monitoring of the businesses supported will be intensified, and an impact assessment conducted over a period of two years.
