No bail for suspect in woman miner’s death - Premier Modise

North West Premier Thandi Modise has called for the 29-year-old man arrested in connection with the murder of a woman at a mine in Rustenburg not to be granted bail.

While calling on mines to develop strategies that will safeguard the safety of woman miners, Premier Modise said that there is no place in society for men who perceive women as objects of sex to the extent that they cannot work with them without posing a danger to them.

“We wish to convey our condolences to the family of the murdered woman and commend police on the swift arrest of the suspect. We support the call by the National Union of Mineworkers for investigations into the death of Pinky Mosiane, who was killed at Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) two years ago to be expedited for the Mosiane family to find closure and for Amplats to reveal the outcome of its independent investigation into her death,” said Modise.

The man who was arrested after the woman’s body was found at Aquarius platinum mine’s Kwezi shaft on Wednesday morning is expected to appear in the Rustenburg Magistrates Court tomorrow. Police suspect that the woman was raped.
