Nelson Mandela Metro and Chris Hani District came top during Best Performance Women Cooperatives and Projects Awards ceremony

Kwanobuhle Outreach Centre from Nelson Mandela Metro and Luncedo Bakery Women’s Cooperative from Chris Hani emerged winners during the Best Performing Women Cooperatives/Projects Award ceremony.

Ten nominated projects participated on this ceremony, five from social welfare services programme (programme two) and another five came from community development programme (programme three). Qhugqwala Women’s Empowerment Project, Ukomeleza Abafazi ICT Project, Kwanobuhle Outreach Centre, Nonkqubela Leather Works and Sophumelela Women Cooperative were the nominees for programme two, whilst Masincedane Poultry Project, Lindsay Community Project, Masithembane Poultry Project, Ilitha Women Cooperative and Luncedo Bakery Women’s Cooperative made it to programme three’s nominees list.

Sophumelela and Qhugqwala came second and third respectively for social welfare services programme, whilst Ilitha and Masithembane came second and third respectively for community development programme.

MEC for Social Development, Ms Nonkosi Mvana and MEC for Roads and Public Works, Ms Pemmy Majodina were present during this prestigious ceremony. It was held at East London’s Christian Centre on Friday, 15 October 2009.
