In 1956 more than 20 thousand women from all walks of life marched to the Union Building to protest against the pass laws. These women bravely made a giant statement which would play a pivotal role in the transformation of South Africa years later.
Today, 53 years later, women have and continue to make significant strides in all spheres of our society, and the well-being of their families while also contributing in the upliftment of their communities.
The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) which, while operating as the Umsobomvu Youth Fund and the National Youth Commission, made a significant contribution in the empowerment of women through specific women-focused programmes, wishes to acknowledge the women of yesterday and today for their continuous efforts in building a better South Africa.
The NYDA was launched by the honourable President Jacob Zuma on 16 June 2009 with the aim to advance youth development through guidance and support to youth development initiatives across sectors of society and spheres of government.
Most importantly it is responsible for coordinating the implementation of the Integrated Youth Development Strategy for the country.
NYDA Chairperson, Andile Lungisa says: "The voices of women resonate even more as they make their mark in the workplace while being pillars of strength at home-they need to be saluted. As we celebrate this special month, our organisation wants to highlight that our doors are open to every woman including young women in rural areas whose dreams are to make a difference in their homes, communities and country."
"We are here to give you a break. We are saying that the NYDA is your chance to define your own destiny just like the phenomenal women of ‘56’," concluded Lungisa.
