National Commissioner Moyane welcomes Public Service Association's decision that no correctional official will join join the strike

The National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Mr Tom Moyane, has welcome the decision of the Public Services Association (PSA) to exempt its members in Correctional Services from the public service strike scheduled to start tomorrow 10 August 2010.

Commissioner Moyane said Correctional Services is an essential security service institution and in terms of the Labour Relations Act any industrial action is prohibited. Correctional officials are therefore expected not to join the strike action as such action would be illegal.

Commissioner Moyane also assured the people of South Africa that there will be no disruption in the delivery of Correctional Services. Even in earlier instances, both PSA and Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) had decided not to join a general strike action of civil servants as Correctional Services is an essential service institution and any industrial action in prohibited by law.
