More skills for Gert Sibande farmers

Maize is the most important grain crop in South Africa and is produced throughout the country under diverse environments. Successful maize production depends on the correct application of production inputs that will sustain the environment as well as agricultural production.

Grain SA and Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Land Administration took an initiative to train farmers on maize production. The training was held in Dagga kraal at Dr .Pixley Ka-Isaka Seme Municipality from 1 to 5 July 2013 with the aim of giving support to advance subsistence and small holder farmers to become commercial farmers.

Farmers were trained on soil types, rain falls, controlling of insects, crop rotation and they were also trained on how to use ploughing implements. The training was more based on theory though practicals were also conducted.

Various demonstrations were conducted to farmers on calibration of tractors, planters and sprayers as well as on how to apply chemicals on garden to control weeds and to use insecticides to control insects and diseases. They were further advised on climate changes and planting season. Farmers were also asking questions during the training for their own benefit.

The training was conducted by Mr. Naas Gouws from Grain SA. Mr. Naas Gouws is very passionate about farming and he even goes extra mile just to give advice and to assist farmers to take care of their plants and farms. If you are in farming, you have to have passion for farming and be able to take right decisions in order to be a successful farmer as Mr. Gouws alluded.

On the last day of training farmers were given a test to be assessed on what they have been trained on of which the results will be given to farmers and the Agric Advisor Mr S Shandu.

Grain SA also assist farmers with the development of a tailor made business plans for their farms, as well as detailed support throughout the season.
