More pregnant women are benefiting from obstetric ambulances

More than 10 000 pregnant women have been transported to health facilities with maternity services in the province’s seven obstetric ambulances between January and July 2010.

These 10 703 pregnant women have benefittedfrom these obstetric ambulances that are used to transport pregnant women who are in labour to facilities with maternity services.

Obstetric ambulances are equipped with all necessary equipment to provide quality treatment and care to both mother and child. The staff deployed to utilise obstetric ambulances is highly qualified in emergency care and are able to handle any complication that may arise on route to the hospital.

To supplement these obstetric ambulances, the department also uses ordinary ambulances as well as private ambulances to transport pregnant women to health facilities.

This is one of the Gauteng’s Department of Health and Social Development’s efforts to reduce neonatal and maternal mortality.  In the current financial year, the Department plans to increase the number of obstetric ambulances in the province from seven to 12.
