More than 10 drivers arrested in Mpumalanga for reckless driving

As part of improving road safety and reducing crime in Mpumalanga, the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, traffic officers have arrested at least 14 drivers.

The arrests came after they, 14 drivers, committed traffic violations that include drunken driving, reckless and negligent, overloading and others. This happened during operations that took place last week.

The operation also succeeded by issuing 6 654 fines to motorists and discontinuing 252 vehicles for not being roadworthy; these vehicles include buses, mini buses and light motor vehicles among others.

In the interim of the operation a number of 307 motor vehicles were also impounded for having not met the minimum required standards for being road worthy. Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe applauded traffic officers for the successes they brought forward during the operation.

“Motorists should remain cautious and obey road rules to avoid finding themselves on the wrong side of the law and at times causing unnecessary accidents.”

Shongwe added that the removal of unroadworthy vehicles is key in eliminating accidents and therefore a call is made to vehicle owners including taxi and bus operators to ensure that they adhere to the rules and regulations of the road.

He further said law enforcement agencies should not spare any mercy on unfit drivers and unroadworthy vehicles in order to save lives.
