Mohono warns contractors not to take the poor for a ride

North West MEC for Human Settlements, Desbo Mohono, has warned emerging contractors that her department would not tolerate shoddy work.

Speaking at the provincial Emerging Contractors' conference recently, Mohono said: "As we proceed with our programme to empower emerging businesses we must do so with a clear conscience that the word 'emerging' is not synonymous with sub-standard quality or shoddy work."

She added that she would insist, on behalf of the people of her province, that all contractors who are given contracts to build houses for the poor do so with a full understanding that people deserve decent and quality houses.

"As government and the business sector, we must frown upon any contractor who takes our people for a ride."

She reminded them that for many centuries, the majority of South Africans had been stripped naked of their human dignity. The 1994 breakthrough brought a possibility for the restoration of their dignity.

"As an industry, we have a responsibility to build houses that contribute towards the restoration of our people's dignity," she concluded.
