Ministry of Communications wishes the class of 2013 well in their exams

The Ministry of Communications wishes the class of 2013 well in their exams, which start today, 28 October 2013.

"The youth have a wider career choice since 1994. We want young people to use this dividend of freedom to, after conquering matric, consider careers in the vast area of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)," said Deputy Minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams.

She said young people, especially young girls should consider careers in areas such as Information Technology management, network planning and designing, programming, broadcasting in a digital era, cyber security, ICT regulation and ICT policy making.

Ndabeni-Abrahams said the Department of Communications plays a crucial role in ensuring a more inclusive society by providing computers and internet access to pupils and their teachers through the Schools Connectivity programme that is run in partnership with the Department of Basic Education and private companies.

She said a more inclusive society will be characterised by more young women taking their rightful place in this sector that has a huge potential for boosting the country’s economic growth and job creation.

"The jobs of the future are in ICT. This is what we are referring to when we talk of a knowledge and information economy. These jobs will be paying better than traditional jobs and have an enormous ability to change lives and society. Young people need to prepare for this future by augmenting their skills and ready themselves to compete with the youth of the world in making our world a better place," said Ndabeni-Abrahams.
