Minister TW Nxesi expressed condolences and visited families of the diseased poultry farm workers in Paarl

The Minister of the Department of Employment and Labour, TW Nxesi, passed condolences and visits families of the deceased farm workers who died at a poultry farm in Paarl, Western Cape.

The department of employment and labour has called for a section 31 hearing following the deaths of two Poultry farm workers and injuries to five others after falling into a pit in Paarl (Western Cape).

This comes after a visit to the farm by employment and labour minister, Thulas Nxesi.

It is alleged that on the 8th of January 2023 at approximately 13h00 whilst workers were doing their normal work, they sensed an offensive smell coming from the bottom of the pit. According to the survivor, the colleague went down to investigate but was overwhelmed by the strong odour and collapsed. The supervisor rushed in to assist the worker but collapsed too. 

Speaking after visiting the site, Minister Nxesi said the department through its inspectors and investigators would leave no stone unturned to get to the bottom of the matter. He send his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to those in hospital.
