Minister Shabangu lauds Chilean mine rescue mission

South Africa’s Minister of Mineral Resources, Ms Susan Shabangu, wishes to congratulate her Chilean counterpart, the Minister of Mining Mr Lourence Golborne, and all other role-players involved in the rescue of the 30 mine workers trapped underground for 69 days.

It is with pride that a South African mining company contributed its expertise and innovation to the efforts to ensure that the miners were brought to the surface without harm.

The involvement of Murray & Roberts demonstrates the magnitude of South African expertise and experience in rescue operations.

The Department of Mineral Resources will obtain the details of this incident and rescue operations so that we draw lessons that will assist the industry in preventing a similar occurrence.

“The Chilean rescue operations further demonstrated that when all stakeholders, i.e.  the state, mine owners and employees work together on health and safety success can be achieved,” said Minister Shabangu.
