Minister sends congratulatory message to Dr Lochan Naidoo on his appointment as a member of the International Narcotics Bureau

The Minister of Social Development, Ms Edna Molewa congratulates Dr Lochan Naidoo, a member of the South African Central Drug Authority on his appointment by the United Nations Economics and Social Council to the International Narcotics Bureau.

"On the occasion of your official appointment as a member of the International Narcotics Bureau, I would like to express my warmest congratulations to you. I am convinced that your vast experience in the field of narcotics and drug trafficking will go a long way in making a significant contribution towards combating the global drug trade. Your appointment to this prestigious position reflects the confidence that United Nations member states have in the expertise in our country," said the Minister

The International Narcotics Bureau is a professional body consisting of 13 experts in the field of substance abuse and drug trafficking, and derives its mandate from the United Nations Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs (1961). Its primary function is to monitor international and domestic movement of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, used for medical and scientific needs.

Dr Naidoo is a qualified medical doctor with a number of post-graduate qualifications in the treatment of chemical dependence and has been working in this field for a period of more than 25 years. Currently Dr Naidoo is the Executive Director of a drug treatment centre in KwaZulu-Natal and a part-time lecturer at the Nelson Mandela School of Medicine, University KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
