The Minister of Public Enterprises, Pravin Gordhan is saddened by the news of the passing of veteran journalist, Xolani Gwala. Minister Gordhan conveys his sincere and profound condolences to his wife, Peggy Sue Khumalo, his children and rest of the family.
In this era of sensational journalism, Xolani broadcasting was meticulous and always informed by his inquisitive approach to issues, looking for the facts behind each story. During his time at the public broadcaster, Xolani kept “South Africa talking”, canvassing views from all corners of our country. In his profound love for South Africa and its institutions, he sought always to promote democratic values as enshrined in the Constitution.
Mr Gwala was a consummate professional, one of the few in the media industry who dedicated their lives to exposing corruption and speaking for the voiceless.
Xolani will be remembered for his mild-mannered approach to interviews but was never afraid to ask hard questions which he tempered with his infectious laughter and always remained respectful.
Xolani will always be admired for his courage to lead the cancer awareness campaign, “Change for Cancer”, for promoting access to treatment for those who could not afford it. Amidst his own pain and struggle with cancer, he was selfless and humble, putting others before himself.
South Africa has lost a broadcasting icon and humble soul. He was a great South African.
