Minister Peters appeals to citizens to avert disconnections

The Minister of Energy, Ms Dipuo Peters would like to make an urgent plea to government departments, the business community, household consumers and all South Africans who earn a living and public servants to pay for their municipal services so as to avert any possible disconnections.

It is the Minister’s view that the current culture of non-payment for services by government departments, commercial entities and business would further cripple efforts by the municipalities to continue providing this much needed essential services to all.

Eskom supplies about 95% of South Africa’s electricity and sells it in bulk to municipalities which distribute to consumers within their boundaries, therefore the Department of Energy will not intervene in the current discussions between Eskom and the affected municipalities as this is a debtor versus creditor matter. This is a commercial contract which all municipal managers, municipal chief financial officers, and managers should be responsible for.
