Minister Ndebele on purchase of 2010 FIFA World Cup tickets by Department of Transport

Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele, responding to a parliamentary question on 6 July, confirmed that the Department of Transport did not purchase any tickets for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The minister further confirmed that certain transport public entities purchased tickets for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) spent R10.8 million for tickets, the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) spent R4.6 million on tickets, the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) set aside R2.2 million for tickets and the Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) spent R1.4 million on tickets.

“Spending within government and its various entities must adhere to the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) and Treasury Regulations. Any wasteful and fruitless expenditure is subject to the PFMA which clearly outlines consequences for such expenditure,” said Minister Ndebele.
