Minister Ndebele on more than 20 road deaths during the weekend

Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele has conveyed condolences to the families of more than 20 people killed on South Africa’s roads over the past weekend, including 12 people who died in a horrific head-on mini-bus taxi collision outside Laingsburg in the Western Cape yesterday, 16 October 2010.

“We convey our condolences to the families and relatives of all those who lost their lives in road crashes across the country over the past weekend. We wish those injured a speedy recovery. Twelve people were reported killed in a horrific mini-bus taxi collision outside Laingsburg in the Western Cape yesterday, 16 October 2010.

“The ‘Make Roads Safe’ Campaign and new National Rolling Traffic Law Enforcement Plan (NREP), effective 1 October 2010, is about safer roads in South Africa. The NREP will see law enforcement officers stop and check no less than 1 million vehicles and drivers every month across South Africa. In the first two weeks, from 1 to 14 October 2010, more than half a million vehicles and drivers have been stopped and checked and thousands of fines issued for various traffic offences.

“There are far too many road traffic violations. There are far too many road deaths. Safety and efficient transport are non-negotiable if our country is to move fast to becoming a developed country. We must put an end to these unnecessary deaths. Together, we can stop the carnage on our roads,” said Minister Ndebele.
