Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele has said the new King Shaka International Airport is a clear indication of where South Africa wants to be in terms of development.
The minister made these remarks during his visit to the King Shaka
International Airport in KwaZulu-Natal yesterday, 1 May 2010 as the airport commenced its first day of operations.
“The new Greenfield King Shaka International Airport (KSIA) marks the fulfilment of a dream which we started in 1996 and has now come to completion. It heralds a new era in aviation in KwaZulu-Natal and South
Africa. This world class facility is a clear indication of where South
Africa wants to be in terms of development. President Jacob Zuma will officially open the KSIA on 8 May 2010.
“With less than 40 days to go to the 2010 FIFA World Cup, we, the transport family, are putting our best forward to ensure that all those who use our transport services are able to do so effectively and efficiently. We have always maintained that the World Cup is not only about sport; it is more about transport. To this end, government has invested billions of rands on public transport to ensure that the World
Cup leaves a rich legacy for our country and continent. The transport action plan for 2010 is complete and we are ready to host the world.
“A key component to the successful hosting of the World Cup will be customer focused and world class airports. Through the Airports Company
South Africa (ACSA), we are committed to delivering exactly that to thousands of passengers daily. With a mass of additional passengers expected for this prestigious tournament, we are fully prepared,” said the minister.
