Minister Motshekga attends BRICS Education Ministers Meeting while at 37th UNESCO General Conference

The Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga attended the first meeting of BRICS Education Ministers led by Chairperson, Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande while in Paris for the 37th UNESCO General Conference.

The agenda was developed within the context of UNESCO priorities and the meeting looked specifically at how to promote intra-BRICS cooperation at the level of schools, technical and vocational education and training as well as higher education.

Each country made strong proposals for collaboration to strengthen education systems within BRICS countries. Ministers expressed agreement on exchanging experience, knowledge and expertise on common areas of difficulty and conducting thematic and comparative studies on the quality of education.

The BRICS Education Ministers agreed to meet in Brazil in 2014 to kick start activities and to establish a Technical Committee to facilitate joint work and in so doing setting the collaboration is off to a strong start.
