Minister Fikile Mbalula on interventions to deal with backlog at Driving Licensing Testing Centres

The Minister of Transport Mr Fikile Mbalula joined by the CEO of the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) Advocate Makhosini Msibi made an unannounced visit to Themba Driving Licencing Testing Centre (DLTC) in Hammanskraal. This visit follows outrage from drivers and vehicle owners who are frustrated from the current backlog on the online booking system.

The Minister acknowledged the challenge of corruption at DLTCs nationwide and committed himself to ensure that perpetrators are brought to book. He announced the following interventions to ease the backlog:

  • 70% of capacity, human resources and equipment at DLTC's  will be dedicated to servicing expired driving licence card renewals and professional driving permits (PDPs)
  • 70% of slots on the online booking system will be dedicated to expired driving licence cards and professional driving permits (PDPs)
  • Two satellite centres will be opened at the RTMC offices in Centurion and Midrand
  • A Task team has been established to advise the Gauteng Department of Transport on the procurement of mobile centres
  • An operations centre will be opened to daily monitor operations at DLTCs and evaluate the availability of booking slots which will operate from Monday 16 November 2020
  • Extended operational hours will be introduced with centres opening from Monday to Sunday from next week
  • All DLTC's falling under the Tshwane Metro will open from 6 am starting in December
  • These interventions will remain in force until the backlog is cleared

The Minister of Transport expressed his apology to motorists for the inconvenience caused due to the unavailability of slots to renew licenses and committed to consider a validity extension in this regard.

The RTMC urges anyone with information on fraud and corruption taking place at the driving licence testing centres to report such activities on 0861 400 800.
