Minister Dipuo Peters sends condolences following Potchefstroom Aircraft crash

Transport Minister Honourable Dipuo Peters has expressed shock and sadness and sent her deep felt condolences following the death of two people on board an aircraft that crashed in Potchefstroom in the North West province this morning.

The fatal crash, which involved a Raven 500 (ZU-ENR) with the two on board occurred in the Potchefstroom Aerodrome during a fly pass. The aircraft had just taken off from the Potchefstroom Aerodrome and was intended to land at the Wonderboom Aerodrome when the crash occurred.

The Civil Aviation Branch of the Department of Transport together with the Accident and Incident Investigation Division of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) have dispatched a team of investigators to determine the cause of the crash.

Preliminary reports indicate that the aircraft impacted the ground within the aerodrome parameters resulting in the crash, however the investigation team will, upon completion of its investigations, compile a report which would give details on the cause.

The Minister has called for a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the fatal crash and for all the role players in the investigation to work together to bring the investigation to a speedy completion.

"We send our heartfelt condolences to the families, relatives and the friends of the deceased. Our hearts are with them at this time of grief", said Minister Pers.

The Department of Transport has also reiterated its commitment to ensuring safety in all modes of transport, including air, road, rail and sea transportation at all times.
