Minister Angie Motshekga meets Höerskool Overvaal stakeholders

The situation unfolding at Höerskool Overvaal is deeply concerning for all stakeholders involved, and resulting in untenable tensions that are directly affecting the school environment.  A school needs to be a peaceful place that is conducive to effective teaching and learning.

For this reason stakeholders directly involved in education met this morning on the sidelines of the Basic Education Sector Lekgotla to find a way forward and de-escalate the situation at the school. This was followed by a visit to the school to assess the situation on the ground and defuse the situation to prevent any escalation of hostilities.

These stakeholders convened by Minister of Basic Education, Mrs Angie Motshekga included Gauteng Education MEC, Mr Panyaza Lesufi, as well as Teacher Union, SAOU and School Governing Body Organisation, FEDSAS.

“We are all deeply concerned and disappointed in developments taking place outside the school and for this reason, despite our difference of opinion on the matter, we have decided it is extremely important to come together with a common goal of restoring order to that school.” Said Minister Motshekga.

All parties agreed that a court decision on the matter stands, and while the Gauteng Department does still plan to appeal the judgement, an existing court decision has been handed down by the Gauteng High Court and needs to be respected.

The various stakeholders consulted agreed to respect the legal processes as it unfolds. It was agreed that those who have an interest in this matter are welcome to join the court application as friends of the court.

The parties have agreed to work together to deescalate tensions at the Hoerskool Overvaal and consult with the various constituencies.

The safety of learners and the return of normal teaching and learning is paramount in this situation and cannot be compromised.
