Media statement from the Minister of Basic Education regarding the decision by South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) to strike next week

The Department of Basic Education has noted the decision taken last night by the National Executive Council of the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) to embark on strike action from 5 August 2010.

The Minister of Basic Education, Ms Angie Motshekga remains hopeful that the strike by educators can still be averted. The minister, together with other ministers, are scheduled to meet on Thursday to develop a collective approach in this regard.

“I call upon all learners, especially matriculants to remain focused on their studies”, says Minister Motshekga.

We call on all our learners to do the best they can to access our academic support initiatives through this time. We will also request our senior officials, parents and civil society to assist our learners during this difficult time. We call on parents and care givers of younger learners to take extra care and ensure that their children are supervised and provided with guidance at all times.

As the responsible employer, we wish to assure learners and their parents, and South Africans in general, that we do have plans in place to mitigate the negative effects of a teachers' strike on the future of our learners.
