Media statement on Executive Council (EXCO) meeting of 25 August 2010

The Executive Council (EXCO) of the Limpopo provincial government held its monthly meeting yesterday, on 25 August 2010 at Mopani District Municipality. The meeting welcomed the report by the Municipal Manager of Mopani District Municipality, Mr Tim Maake on the progress made in the implementation of the presidential pilot project on comprehensive rural development at Muyexe village before visiting some of the completed projects.

The report spelt out above shows that government has been able to create 535 jobs through in sectors such as construction and agriculture. On the construction side, the report maintains that since the beginning of the pilot project government has built the following structures at Muyexe:

  • 383 RDP houses and 150 pit toilets
  • Thusong Service Center
  • Post Office
  • A library and computer laboratory
  • Early Childhood Development Center
  • Ablution block at the secondary school
  • Renovated the clinic, satellite police station, both primary and secondary schools.
  • Pfunani brick yard

On the agricultural side, government has been able to accomplish the following:

  • 28 vegetable tower gardens have been completed.
  • 280 backyard gardens and a poultry project have been fenced.
  • 487 Jojo tanks have been delivered for rain water harvesting.

Other services that are embarked upon to strengthen partnership between government and the private sector institutions include, ethanol gel project that is implemented by SASOL and the extension of Vodacom network service to Muyexe.

With regards to provision of social services to the people of Muyexe, it was reported that most poverty stricken families are receiving food parcel. At the moment, 776 households were profiled through the National Integrated Information System in order for government to develop a comprehensive response to the socio-economic challenges confronting each family.

The meeting also discussed the ongoing public sector industrial action. It was noted with appreciation that there are public servants who continue to do their work particularly at institutions that are providing essential services to assist government to render services to the people.

Equally, the meeting also welcomed the response made by people who have heeded the call to volunteer in the hospitals and clinics in the province.
