MEC Yawa opens R24,5 million motor vehicle registration, licensing and testing centre

A motor vehicle registration, licensing and testing centre built at a cost of R24,5 million was officially opened by North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa in Potchefstroom last Friday.

The best practice model centre designed by Business Against Crime is intended to increase revenue collection, reduce long queues at the testing station, improve levels of efficiency and effectiveness, maintain the integrity of eNatis records and to uproot corrupt practices in the motor vehicle management system.

In his keynote address delivered after he had unveiled the plaque for the centre with Executive Mayor for Tlokwe City Council, Maphetlhe Maphetlhe, MEC Yawa said fraud and corruption by some traffic officials contribute immensely towards the unacceptable high rate of road accidents and road fatalities through unroadworthy vehicles and incompetent drivers given legitimacy through corrupt practices in the motor vehicle management system.

“Illegal re-registration of stolen or highjacked vehicles and illegal issuing of roadworthy certificates are facilitated corrupt practices, inadequate controls and poorly defined business process in licensing, vehicle roadworthy testing and clearance,” said Yawa, adding that such cancerous practices and heinous crime impact negatively on the economy of the province.

With the new centre, Yawa said that his department intends to reverse all the bad practices and create conducive environment to realise Batho Pele principles by providing necessary services to the people.

In appreciating the centre handed over by the provincial government, Executive Mayor Maphetle said the centre would provide a one stop service where the community would apply for learners and driver’s licenses register and test roadworthiness of their vehicles and pay for their traffic fines.
