MEC Vusi Shongwe on Tonga head-on collision

Tonga head on collision leaves five dead over the weekend

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe calls for increased alertness on the part of drivers in order to reduce deaths and injuries resulting from road crashes.

This comes after five people were killed in a head on collision on Saturday, 29 November 2014 between a sedan and a Light Delivery Vehicle (LDV) on the D2948 Road between Tonga and Mangweni at about 18h20. Two people were certified dead on the scene and three later died in hospital.

Shongwe sends his condolences to the bereaved families and assures communities that the department will work tirelessly this Festive Season to ensure that road crashes are reduced.

“We will not hesitate to arrest motorists who do not comply with the rules of the road. We will make sure that they pay the price and this will send a message to other motorists,” said Shongwe.

Shongwe said head-on collisions can be avoided if drivers are always alert when they are behind the steering wheel.

He further urged communities and users of public transport to report any act of bad driving to the authorities to avoid large number of fatalities caused by vehicle collisions during the busy Festive Season.
