MEC to take part in the 702 Walk The Talk

In an effort to promote healthy lifestyle in the province, Gauteng Health and Social Development MEC Qedani Mahlangu will this Sunday, 25 July 2010 be walking together with 100 senior citizens at the 702 Walk The Talk at Marks Park Sports Club, Emmarentia, Johannesburg.

MEC Mahlangu has also invited national Minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi, North West Health MEC Rebecca Kasienyane and Eastern Cape MEC for Health Phumulo Masualle to participate in the walk.

The department’s healthy lifestyles campaign encourages citizens to take charge of their own health ultimately reducing residents' reliance on the health system for minor illnesses.

More than 75 percent of patients who arrive at Gauteng hospitals suffer from illnesses that can be prevented through healthy lifestyles. Regular exercise, better eating habits, stress management and a drastic cut-down on smoking and drinking are some of the basic changes that will improve the health of the people. The key indicators of a healthy lifestyle include regular exercise, no smoking, no substance abuse or drug use, responsible consumption of alcohol, stress management and good nutrition.

Not only does exercise improve your health but it can go a long way to prevent the onset of several life-threatening conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Exercising also promotes brain health and helps with weight loss.

At the event, entrants will participate either in the 5, 8, 15 or 30 kilometres walk. The first walk starts at 06h30 in the morning.
