MEC Shongwe applauds police for swift arrest of Hazyview suspects

The swift arrest of two suspects linked to the rape of Gauteng tourists in Hazyview should be welcomed by all and sundry as it restores the community’s faith in the work of Justice, Crime, Prevention and Security Cluster [JCPS], this is according to Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe.

Their arrest follows a robbery which occurred at Kruger Park Lodge two weeks ago on Monday 07 October 2013. The suspects were arrested in Hazyview last week Thursday 17 October 2013. It was reported that the suspects gained access to one of the Lodge’s chalets by climbing through an open bedroom window.

On that particular day, two women were allegedly awakened by two men at gunpoint who demanded money. The thugs ransacked the room and robbed the victims of three cellphones, jewellery and went on to rape them.

The MEC is calling for the urgent finalisation of this case. He says the outcome must help in dealing with the behaviour of dangerous criminals in our communities. He further states that people of the province have the responsibility to protect tourists and residents.

“We should not at any point allow criminals to chase away people who have come to enjoy the leisure of our beautiful province. Tourism is critical as it enhances the local economy and therefore the attack on tourists is a direct attack on our economy,” the MEC said. The suspects appeared in the White River Magistrate’s Court yesterday [Monday, 21 October 2013] and the case was remanded to 24 October 2013.

The MEC however remains concerned about the spate of attacks at lodges and he is therefore reiterating his call to lodge and hotel owners and managers to enhance security at their establishments and other tourist destinations.
He also pleaded with the owners to work closely with the police in order to ensure safety of their visitors.

This follows another attack on tourists which happened on Sunday, 20 October 2013. Four criminals who were reportedly wearing balaclavas robbed two guests at Timamoon Lodge. It is believed that the robbers held the couple at gunpoint.

During the incident various items were allegedly stolen including an iPad, iPhone, jewellery and cash. Police are investigating. MEC Shongwe has requested community members who might have information on the where abouts of these criminals to bring it forward to the nearest police station.
