MEC Peggy Nkonyeni on situation at Nkonjane High School in KwaMaphumulo

Problems at Nkonjane High School in KwaMaphumulo

The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Education Ms Neliswa Peggy Nkonyeni has today learned with shock that no learning and teaching is taking place at the Nkonjane Secondary School in KwaMaphumulo.

"We have learned with dismay that the principal of Nkonjane High School was chased away last week by the community over a litany of allegations. We want to put it on record that no-one except the Department of Education relevant senior officials after following due processes have a right to suspend or fire any of our employees.

We view the actions of the community in a very poor light. Teaching and learning for hundreds of children has now been disrupted. We urge the members of the community to allow the school to function while we investigate all their grievances and act accordingly," Nkonyeni said.

She added: "We have instructed our Ilembe District Director to intervene immediately to ensure firstly that learning and teaching return to normal within days. Secondly, the District Director will investigate the litany of allegations made by the community members against the Principal, Mr TS Dladla.

"We also wish to reiterate our call to all educators and employees of the KwaZulu-Natal Education Department that there is simply no room at the inn for lethargy and incompetence. People who are a misfit in our education system must either show their interest to learn to empower themselves or voluntarily leave. They must either shape up or ship out," she said.
