MEC Mchunu commends RTI'S sterling work following suspension of 17 trucks at PMB'S Mkhondeni weighbridge

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu, has commended the Department’s Road Traffic Inspectorate after the unit today (24 November) suspended 17 trucks at Pietermaritzburg’s Mkhondeni weighbridge for various defaults.

As part of intensifying law enforcement in the lead up to the festive season, RTI officers carried out an operation which resulted in the testing of 24 trucks, suspension of 17 trucks and the issuing of 28 warrants totalling R21 000.

MEC Mchunu last month re-launched "Operation Phezukwabo", highlighting an intensified focus on heavy vehicles especially trucks, which have featured in recent accidents including the Pinetown accident that claimed 24 lives.

I strongly commend the good work of our law enforcement officers which sends a stern message to all road users that un-roadworthy vehicles will be removed from our roads.

The fact that a one-day, random operation can lead to suspension of 17 trucks demonstrates the seriousness of the challenge we are dealing with. That is why we are beefing up our traffic officer visibility to ensure that we curb road traffic infringements and therefore road crashes and deaths," said Mchunu.
