MEC Manketsi Tlhape to proclaim the date of next by-election in Tlokwe

North West MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs Manketsi Tlhape said she is ready to proclaim the date for the next by-elections in Tlokwe Municipality. This follows yesterday’s Electoral Court ruling in Bloemfontein which ordered the IEC to request, as contemplated by Section 8 of Local Government Municipal Electoral Act 27 of 2000, the Member of the Executive Council to postpone the by-elections scheduled for today (18 September 2013) in ward 1, 4, 11, 12 and 20 of Tlokwe Municipality.

The Electoral Court further ordered that the IEC lodge a full investigation into the conduct of one of its officials pertaining to the registration of the candidates for the municipal by-elections and that all five complainants be allowed to register as candidates in their respective wards for the postponed  by-elections.

MEC Tlhape said “the next by-elections will be proclaimed as soon as the requisition from the IEC has reached my office so that all the parties involved should begin to prepare for elections as soon as possible. The proclamation will also include ward 13 of Tlokwe where elections were also postponed and also at ward 5 of Tswaing Municipality where a vacancy was declared following the resignation of a councilor”.

Currently elections are continuing as arranged in three wards of Tlokwe Municipality namely 18, 6 and 26.
