MEC proves that there are no bucket toilets in GP following claims that they still exist
Gauteng Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements MEC Jacob Mamabolo embarked on an in-loco inspection to investigate the claims of bucket system usage in L&J in Centurion and Dukathole informal settlement in Germiston. This follows announcement by MEC that the bucket system was formally eradicated in Gauteng after the last of this system was put to an end in Ratanda, Sedibeng in June this year.
The MEC’s visit follows the Power FM interview where he reiterated that the Gauteng province has completely eradicated the bucket system and declared it a bucket free province. Two callers refuted his announcement by alleging that there are still bucket toilets in L&J and Dukathole informal settlements.
MEC Mamabolo took an exclusive tour with Power FM to L&J informal settlements and proceeded to Dukathole, accompanied by the MMC for Housing in Ekurhuleni Cllr Aubrey Nxumalo, where it was confirmed that there are no bucket toilets in these areas.
“We still have a huge challenge of sanitation in informal settlements which use chemical toilets. However I am proud to say that we eradicated the apartheid bucket system a few months ago in Gauteng province, the last area that was still using this system was Ratanda in Heidelberg” said Mamabolo.
Mamabolo further said that he is willing to engage the communities on the issues of sanitation. “We know that sanitation remains a problem, we will continue to engage our communities and try to speed up service delivery. We want to talk to our people and show them that this is the government of the people that is open and transparent in engaging its communities” the MEC said.
The MEC commended Power FM for embarking on a fact finding mission with him in the area. “The good working relations we have with the media is paying dividends. This is real partnership at work, we appreciate this kind of initiative by the radio station” said MEC Mamabolo
The Democratic Alliance representative Climax Shimange and ANC representative Alfred Moagi in L&J informal settlement both agreed that there was never a bucket system usage in the area.
