MEC hand over fully furnished houses to needy families

Gauteng Human Settlements MEC Ntombi Mekgwe has allocated two fully furnished houses to needy families of Duduza in Ekurhuleni today. The families were identified during the door to door campaign in the area where it was ascertained that their houses were in a state of despair with no water and electricity.

In October, MEC Mekgwe demolished the dilapidated houses of the two families to make way for the newly built houses. The MEC was supported by LTE Consulting who pledged to build the new houses to change the lives of the two families.

MEC Ntombi Mekgwe said through community work, activism and volunteerism they were able to identify these two families as needing immediate intervention. “I am happy that today we are here to hand over fully furnished houses for these two families. They can now have peaceful nights without worrying if the houses will fall in their sleep,“ said Mekgwe.

She said a call to action was made, and the response was overwhelming. “The people of Duduza came in their numbers to assist these two families. They also helped in bringing down the two old and dilapidated houses and to rebuild them,” said Mekgwe.

Mekgwe said from the business side LTE Consulting opened up their hearts and committed their hands, hearts and money in rebuilding the homes of the Dube and Sibiya families. “More can still be done to help other such needy families, and I therefore call on other companies to follow the example set by LTE Consulting,” said Mekgwe.

MEC Mekgwe said as the community of Duduza that went through a lot of difficulties together, including the 1980’s violence and the recent tornado, they can continue to join hands to help those who are less fortunate than them. “We have done it before, we are doing and we can do even better tomorrow.”

Mekgwe said one of the bigger challenges in communities is to instil a sense of responsibility, morality and respect amongst the youth. “Equally important we must educate our society about women and children’s rights. As we currently participate in the 16 Days of no Violence against Women and Children, we must continue to fight for the total eradication of violence against women and children. Let Duduza be an example of a violence-free community,” said MEC Mekgwe.
