MEC Gloria Barry launches the OR Tambo District Safer Schools Programme

Eastern Cape MEC for Transport and Safety Gloria Barry will launch the OR Tambo District Safer Schools Programme at King Sabata Dalindyebo Further Education and Training (FET) College in Ngangelizwe, Mthatha today, 15 May 2009 at 10am.

The objectives of the programme are to:
* promote integrated approach to enhance safety and security in our schools
* mobilise communities to improve the quality of teaching and learning

Ngangelizwe is one of the areas that are affected by crime and violence in schools, which prompted the Department of Safety and Liaison, Department of Education, OR Tambo District Municipality, Ngangelizwe School Governing Body (SGBs) and the South African Police Service (SAPS) to collaborate in formulating a strategy to respond to this prevailing challenge.

“A total of 52 schools have been identified throughout the province as needing urgent attention due to the number of incidents of crime and violence within those schools. Our OR Tambo District office together with the Department of Education has further identified 40 additional schools,” says MEC Barry.

MEC Barry is further expected to outline the Department of Safety and Liaison’s plans to promote community safety with a particular focus on improving the participation of young people in crime prevention.
