MEC cancels fifth Joe Slovo Memorial Lecture to mourn with EC Premier

MEC for Human Settlements, Safety and Liaison Helen Sauls-August has cancelled the fifth Joe Slovo memorial lecture which was scheduled to be addressed by Deputy Chairperson of the National Planning Commission, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa tomorrow in Butterworth.

The lecture has been cancelled due to Premiers bereavement and subsequent memorial service held on the same day of the lecture. Mr Cyril Ramaphosa has already been notified of the cancellation yesterday. “It is with a heavy heart, that we had to cancel because it was on the same day of the memorial service. Joe Slovo lecture concept is based on celebrating the legacy of the late Joe Slovo, but we couldn’t celebrate while our own Premier is mourning,” said MEC Helen Sauls August.

She has also sent apologies to all the guests, the community of Msobomvu, entire Mnquma and Amathole Community who will be inconvenienced by the cancellation.

“We are all looking forward to the lecture address by the Deputy Chairperson, but we have had to take this decision not to celebrate the legacy of our Minister on the same day, the mother of the province has a memorial service of a loved one, it would be insensitive and uncaring of us to continue with the lecture,” she said.

Due to the tight schedule, the lecture will no longer be held this year.
