MEC Butana Komphela goes green in Trompsburg

Free State MEC for Police, Roads and Transport, Honourable Butana Komphela showed his gardening skills in Trompsburg during the Go Green! Go Clean! Community outreach project recently.

It was decided at the EXCO meeting with the Premier, Hon. Ace Magashule, that some Free State Towns need some greening actions. MEC Komphela and his management team had the honor to sink their shovels in the soil of Trompsburg and make a difference to the local community and contribute towards fighting global warming. They assisted to plant a total of 195 trees, 500 ground covers and 500 succulents along 1.46 km of the road.

Mrs Hanlia Kloppers, a horticulturist from the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs assisted the municipality with the landscape planning and the execution of the greening action. The areas to be greened were identified by Kloppers during a survey that was conducted earlier.

The municipality will be responsible to water the new trees and plants weekly and a special educational programme will be run in the community to make them aware of the importance of trees in towns.

The project is part of the Free State’s greening program, Go Green! Go Clean! During the day’s activities it was emphasized that this important project is an investment in the future for our children and for the provision of oxygen, shade and even shelter. Free State towns should follow the example of Soweto with the establishment of much needed parks and recreational areas close to nature.
