MEC Belinda Scott visits matriculants who attended Last Push camp

Top learners fired up to excel in their matric exams

Top achieving matriculants were charged up today as they started their last day camp lessons, when they received a motivational talk from KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Finance Belinda Scott this morning.

MEC Scott told the 95 highfliers from 48 different schools in the Pinetown District that the world is their oyster.

“You have worked hard for years and shown character. You were chosen as the crème de la crème at your respective schools to be here. You have received the best support from subject advisors, preparing you for the exams. Now it is in your hands to excel. Focus on your school work until the last day. We are not talking about passing your matriculation examinations but excelling in your matriculation pass. We want you to achieve your highest goals in life,” said MEC Scott.

The learners had a week-long camp with subject advisors at KwaThintwa School for the Deaf, assisting them to improve the quality of their work before the learners write their final examinations.

The camp is part of the Department of Education’s Last Push campaign to improve the quality of the learners’ work. MEC Scott arrived early at the school to pep up the learners (most of whom come from disadvantaged backgrounds).

District Director Dr Sibusiso Kheswa said the department is pulling out all stops to improve this year’s matric results.

“We want to add quality to their work and increase the pass percentage in their exams. We want more distinctions and bachelors in their final results,” said Dr Kheswa.

MEC Scott adopted this school two years ago. She has become a regular visitor to donate furniture, books and food packs. Earlier this year she came to celebrate the sixth 100% pass rate that the school had achieved.
