Latest update in the process to avoid loss of strategic capacity and employment associated with the Frame Vertical Pipeline (FVP) textile facility

The Minister of Trade and Industry Dr Rob Davies and Minister of Economic Development Ebrahim Patel met yesterday with the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Economic Development and Tourism, Mike Mabuyakhulu Seardel, and senior officials of South African Clothing and Textile Workers Union (SACTWU), the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), the National Empowerment Fund (NEF) and the Department of Trade and Industry (dti) as part of a process aimed at avoiding the loss of strategic industrial capacity and employment associated with the Frame Vertical Pipeline (FVP).

Following from previous interactions, a productive meeting was held which explored various scenarios to avoid the loss of strategic capacity and employment associated with the Frame Vertical Pipeline (FVP) operation. The meeting set a deadline of the end of June 2009 for reaching finality on this matter and all parties pledged their best endeavours to ensure the retention of strategic textile production capabilities, maintenance of supply to customers and employment and economic activity in a region of the country with high levels of unemployment.
