The matter of "fugitive” Dr Ganesh Anil Anirudhra who is facing 319 charges for allegedly defrauding private medical aid schemes and the Department of Labour was this week postponed by the Brits Magistrates Court to June 9.

The State's Prosecutor in the matter of Dr Ganesh Anil Anirudhra was still awaiting the decision of the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) on whether the case could be transferred to the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crime Court.

Dr Anirudhra is out on a bail of R20 000.

He has been on the run for years until he was arrested by the police’s elite unit, the Hawks at his place of work in December 2012 at the George Mukhari Hospital in Garankuwa near Tshwane. Dr Anirudhra is alleged to have made fraudulent claims against private medical aid schemes including Bonitas and the Department of Labour’s Compensation Fund between 2008 and 2012.

He is alleged to have left a trail of fictitious claims against the Fund claiming to have treated “injured workers” whom he did not treat.

Dr Anirudhra is alleged to have made 218 illegal claims to Bonitas. He was previously convicted in 1989 and 1991 for fraud. It is also alleged that he practiced as a gynaecologist while only registered as a general practitioner.

The Compensation Fund is a public entity under the authority of the Department of Labour. The Fund provides cover for workers injured and/or for diseases sustained at work.
