KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu to work with National Police Commissioner

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu has promised to allocate more resources to assist the National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega to ensure an effective implementation of the national crime prevention strategy which she presented during the sitting of the provincial cabinet today.

“In order to make an impact, we will align our own provincial crime strategy to the national strategy. The presence of the national police commissioner in cabinet today is a clear demonstration that the provincial government want to ensure that the people of KwaZulu-Natal leave in a free and democratic state where there is no housebreaking, no drug trafficking, no stock theft, not hijackings and no rape of women.”

“We want KwaZulu-Natal province to be at the forefront of the fight against crime. It is for this reason that in 2010 the provincial government launched the United Front Against Crime. Our feeling as government at that time was that it is important that we unite the people of this country and begin to move away from the usual attitude of often blaming the police but to refine a multi prong strategy to fight crime.”

“We are sending a clear declaration that we love our freedom so much that we are prepared to work together to defeat what stands between us and our freedom. We call upon civil society to participate in this fight against crime and government will continue to allocate resources to support community crime prevention associations, street crime committees and neighbourhood watch groups in order to make it impossible for criminals to operate.

“Cabinet was also briefed about the plans for the festive season as well as the upcoming general elections. We are satisfied with the measures have already been put in place by law enforcement agencies to ensure that international and domestic visitors enjoy their stay in this province. Hotspot areas have been identified and police have been deployed accordingly to deal prevent contact crime.”

“With regards to violence during general elections, our security machinery has been strengthened to ensure that peace prevails and that any unruly elements found to be violating the rights of others faces the full might of the law.”

“In addition, to support the work of the law enforcement agencies we will kick-starting Multi-Task Committee negotiations involving leaders of political parties. We want to promote the co-existence of political parties and for leaders to explain to their supporters the importance of sustaining democracy.”
