KZN First Lady to champion the cause of Women

The first lady of the province of KwaZulu-Natal who is also the Mayor of uThungulu District Municipality Cllr Thembeka Mchunu is accompanying Premier Senzo Mchunu on his official visit to Moscow, Russia.

Speaking shortly after the opening of the KwaZulu-Natal Russia Business Exhibition, Cllr Mchunu while she was determined to ensure that women owned business were given the right platform to showcase their skills, she would mount an intensive campaign aimed at opening international markets for women.

“I have interacted with women from KZN who are exhibiting their products and services here in Moscow and have assured them of my support. The main issue for me is that if levels of economic development are to be sustained then there must be a full and equal participation of all women at all levels.”

“Women as mothers hold the key to building a future free of malnutrition and hunger. A key factor contributing to hunger and food insecurity is gender inequality within communities.”

“Working with the Office of the Status of Women and Children in the Premier’s Office and nationally, I will champion the cause that will ensure that women issues take centre stage in the corridors of power, and progress in addressing inequalities is monitored.”

“It is my fervent belief that the economic well-being of a society cannot be achieved if women are massively under privileged compared to their male counterparts. Nor can an economy remain healthy without utilising the contributions and skills of women in different economic activities whether its engineering, construction, arts and craft, baking, sewing, maritime and mining.”
