KwaZulu-Natal says its final goodbye to Madiba

Residents of the province of KwaZulu-Natal, got a chance to say their final goodbye to the former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, at the Provincial memorial service which was held at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, on 13 December.

The memorial in Durban was the final culmination of activities that had taken place during the week as the province and country mourned the loss of the great global icon which is Madiba. Earlier in the week the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Nomusa Dube-Ncube, addressed a prayer service which was hosted by the Diakonia Council of Churches, on Thursday, 12 December.

In her address Dube-Ncube, called on the churches to work together with the government and all other sectors of society to ensure that the gains that have been made in the country, are not lost.

“As a country we are standing at a critical point and we have to ensure that we continue to build a new democratic South Africa, which will be inclusive to all its citizens, the churches have a role to play in making this happen,” said Dube-Ncube.

In the memorial held at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, over 40 000, people gathered at the stadium to honour Madiba. Various political parties from across the province got a chance to also pay homage to the former president. The Minister for Higher Education and Training Dr Blade Nzimande, addressed the crowd, on the important lessons that we all could learn from the life of Nelson Mandela.

The atmosphere in the stadium was electric, as musicians of different genres and poets kept the crowd on their feet, with renditions of song and poetry inspired by Madiba.
