KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu, has noted today's (9 January 2014) release of festive season's preliminary statistics, covering 1 December 2013 to 7 January 2014 by the Minister of Transport, Honourable Dipuo Peters.

MEC Mchunu has also noted the statistics highlighting KwaZulu-Natal has to date recorded 237 crashes and 284 fatalities - while awaiting the final figures.

He has further stated that the province will continue to intensify its road safety campaigns and law enforcement programmes to ensure that the lives of road users - including drivers, passengers, cyclists and pedestrians - are safeguarded.

“In KwaZulu-Natal we remain very committed and focused on ensuring that our citizens are safe on our roads. As such, we will continue with our already escalated road safety and law enforcement programmes and maintain the momentum we have built since the October Transport Month.

We remain convinced that foremost road safety is our collective responsibility. This means we all have to value life; our own and that of the next person. Valuing life means we all have the permanent duty to strictly adhere to the road traffic rules, respect speed limits, fasten seat-belts, and ensure we don't drink and drive,” said Mchunu.
