MEC for Transport, Community and Liaison Mr. Willies Mchunu has commended the Public Transport Enforcement Unit (PTEU) for their successful operation in impounding 61 minibuses at Park Rynie last weekend.
These operations followed the MEC’s call for the deployment of the PTEU to stabilise the South Coast region which has experienced taxi violence involving the Jolivet, uMzinto, Mkomaas and Highflats areas.
The 61 minibuses were impounded because they did not have legal operating licenses. The drivers were arrested and appeared in the Scottsburgh Magistrate Court, after which they were released on R1 500 bail each.
"Peace and stability in the public transport industry are priority issues for us. It is important that law enforcement and regulatory compliance are upheld. In this regard, I wish to applaud PTEU for working to ensure that the taxi industry continues to be safe and reliable for citizens," said Mchunu.
