KwaZulu-Natal Legislature embarks on schools functionality visits

KwaZulu-Natal Legislature MPLs to embark on schools functionality visits

As part of the Schools Functionality Monitoring Programme, Members of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature will, this week, be deployed throughout the province to assess the state of readiness in different schools for the beginning of the 2014 academic year.

This time Legislature Members will also have an opportunity to engage members of the community in stakeholder meetings to get the views of the locals on how best can teaching and learning in their specific communities be improved.

The school visits are done together with the department of education as part of KwaZulu-Natal Legislature's oversight exercise over the executive arm of government. Once Members have monitored schools throughout the province they will come back and report their findings to Education MEC, Ms Neliswa Nkonyeni, who will then make necessary interventions.

"The Schools Functionality Monitoring Programme has been very effective and we believe that it has had huge impact towards improvement of results," said Legislature Speaker Honourable Lydia Johnson.

During the school visits Members will inspect a number of things including whether schooling begins on the first day of school, delivery of stationery, availability of teaching staff, school infrastructure etc.

“We have been inspired by the positive results produced by the class of 2013 and we want to partner with the provincial education department to make sure that they achieve even better results. This is a very important year in the history of our country as we celebrate twenty years of freedom. We want the class of 2014 to make us proud, by at least, achieving an 80% pass rate,” said Johnson.

She appealed to communities where MPLs will be visiting to attend the Stakeholder Meetings so that they will be able to engage MPLs on how best can we improve education of our children in those specific communities.
