KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu, has welcomed the arrest of Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) officer who was arrested on suspicions of corruption.
It is alleged that on Monday a taxi driver was stopped for routine checks. He was then given a ticket and his vehicle was impounded.
It is reported that the RTI officer demanded a “payout” of a R1 000 to take the vehicle from the pound. The taxi owner reported the incident and the police apprehended the suspect.
Mchunu was stunned at the news that there are still corrupt officers roaming among society and assured the community that this is a clear example that no one is above the law.
“I am pleased that the alleged corrupt official was apprehended. This is a clear message that we do not tolerate any corrupt activities especially among our officers. They should be setting examples within the society they serve. No one is above the law. I would like to applaud the taxi owner that reported the matter, this is a clear indication that the community is also eager to fight against fraud and corruption. I would like to appeal to other traffic officers to discharge their work with integrity. Corrupt officers are also contributing to the scourge of road carnages. We vow to root them out of our system,” said Mchunu.
