Kegakilwe urges sector departments and municipalities to work together with traditional councils

The North West MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Mothibedi Kegakilwe, has once more urged sector departments and municipalities to involve traditional councils in matters that affect their communities. Kegakilwe was addressing a meeting between Barolong boo Tau Rapulana traditional council, community members and councilors in Bodibe near Itsoseng.

He was intervening on a case between the traditional council and the North West Department of Human Settlements which had to stop a housing project in Bodibe because the land had been earmarked for mining operations. He said this was a result of lack of or poor communication and weak intergovernmental relations amongst parties involved.

“It is important that we strengthen our working relationships as government and keep our communities updated on any developments in their area. This can only be done with the involvement of the traditional council,” he said.

He appealed to the traditional council to speed up their negotiations with the mining company and always communicate the outcome of the negotiations to the community.

He advised that a technical assessment be done on the impact of the mining operations in the area.
