Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) arrests two policemen for attempted murder

The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) has arrested two police officers for attempted murder. Warrant Officer (WO) FB Ngcobo (45) and Constable (Const) B Yeni (29) both stationed at Umlazi Field Unit are alleged to have shot and injured a 25  year  old male whilst on foot patrol in the Bhekithemba area, KwaZulu Natal. The shooting occurred in the evening of 21 May 2010.

It is alleged that at about 22h00 on the evening of the shooting, two males (complainants) whilst walking down the road were confronted by two men (accused) who were not in police uniform. The complainants fled on foot when the two men drew their firearms. The complainants allege that the two men did not identify themselves as policemen. The policemen fired gun shots at the complainants as they attempted to flee. A 25 year old male was shot and injured.

Upon learning of the incident, the ICD took over the matter for further investigation. On 12 August 2010, the ICD investigators arrested WO Ngcobo and Const Yeni are on a charge of attempted murder. The two officers made a brief appearance in the Umlazi Magistrates Court today, 12 August 2010. They were released on warning. The case has been postponed to 28 September 2010.
