A hands-on assessment approach by the provincial government

Come 13 January Gauteng will ensure that teaching and learning begin on the first day to start the 2010 academic year.

The Premier and all MECs will spend the whole day visiting schools, meeting with school governing bodies and interacting with parents and community members on education matters. The purpose of this programme is to oversee the readiness of schools for the new academic year.

In preparation for the Back to School Campaign, Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) officials last year visited every public school in the province to determine its state of readiness for the 2010 academic year.

Led by Ms Nomvula Mokonyane and the entire Executive Council in this back to school programme the first step will be to make sure that problems are corrected at schools. The Premier and the Executive Council will be emphasising that improved learner performance is a priority for the Gauteng Provincial Government. They will also highlight problems at schools cannot be resolved without the support of parents, teachers, learners and the community as a whole.

During the weekend, the GDE together with community organisations and schools cleaned up schools in Tembisa. Creecy said the Back to School Campaign will be rolled out in Gauteng every year.

The department has also put in place contingency plans to minimise disruptions. Mobile classrooms are on standby for deployment to various areas where there are space pressures.
