Government to assist families of twelve people killed in road crash

Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele and KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Willies Mchunu have given the assurance that government will do everything possible to assist the families of the twelve people killed in yesterday, Tuesday, 22 June 2010 horrific road crash in KwaZulu-Natal.

According to officials from the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport, it is alleged that the driver of a truck belonging to Crossmoor Transport lost control of his vehicle and collided head-on with a mini-bus taxi on the R34 in the Ngome area near Vryheid in KwaZulu-Natal at approximately 1.30 pm yesterday.

Earlier today, Wednesday, 23 June 2010, MEC Mchunu visited the families of the victims in Vryheid. In a joint statement the Minister and MEC said, “As government, we will do everything possible to assist the families of those killed in this horrific road crash near Vryheid in KwaZulu-Natal yesterday. Officials from the Road Accident Fund have already been dispatched to render necessary assistance to the families, including financial assistance towards the funerals. An independent team of accident investigation and reconstruction specialists have also been assigned to assist with the investigation of this crash. We have also been in discussions with the CEO of Crossmoor Transport who has been extremely empathetic and cooperative.”
